The touching sight was witnessed by a young woman – not named in local media – while she was waiting for her father in Shaanxi Province, northern China.

The girl spotted the emaciated dog carrying a dead puss in its mouth and at first thought it would eat it.

But after watching for a few minutes, she saw the dog was heading to a tree being planted in a large hole in the ground.

Phone footage of the moment shows the dog first digging a grave for its pal before dropping it from its mouth.

Then it covers the cat’s body in earth and rubble before it apparently stood for a few moments in a silent vigil.

The girl shared the heartrending footage on Douyin – China’s version of TikTok – and with the caption: “Looking at the dog, I didn’t expect it to take the cat to the pit under the greening tree and picked the softest piece of soil to put the cat down.

“And I certainly didn’t expect it to dig the dirt with its mouth to cover its friend.

“There were many people and cars passing by, and it got scared a few times.

“Seeing that it was very thin and could no longer dig through the dirt, I decided to finish the job.

“At first, I couldn’t walk forward because I was afraid of scaring it, so I watched it from a distance until it really had no strength, and the cat was mostly covered.

“As it walked away, it took three steps and turned around three times. It was very sad, I had never thought about the relationship between stray animals.

“I hope there will be fewer animals wandering the streets and more caring for them in the future.”
