Elk On The Loose Captured And Safely Relocated From Santa Fe

A bull elk was captured after it wandered into the city streets of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and it was later moved to a more suitable habitat.

Responding to a call from the City of Santa Fe Animal Services at 8:10 am on 12th September, Department staff and officers tracked the animal to the city’s heart, prompting concerns for public safety due to its proximity to urban areas.

The elk, weighing over 900 lbs and estimated to be 4-5 years old, was displaying little fear of humans or pets. With the breeding season approaching, there were worries about potential aggression.

To safeguard both residents and the elk, Department personnel and Animal Control officers sedated and relocated the animal by 11:00 am.

The elk was found to be in good health and it was later released in northern New Mexico, away from existing moose populations.

Mike Sloane, director of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, commended the successful operation, ensuring the elk can thrive without posing a threat.
