A woman who filmed her pet Siberian husky swigging from a bottle of beer has been fined by judges in Brazil.
The footage, uploaded to social media, showed the dog’s 31-year-old owner, not named by local media, tilting the bottle so her pet could gulp it down.
The police in Presidente Prudente, in the state of Sao Paulo, arrested the owner on 23rd October after tip-offs from angry social media users.
The husky was seized and put in kennels while its owner was charged with animal cruelty.
The police said that she confessed to feeding her dog beer and “confirmed the authenticity of the video” but “declared that she did not imagine its negative repercussions”.
The owner was fined BRL 3,000 (GBP 490) for animal mistreatment and will face criminal charges, according to local media.
No breed of dog can safely drink alcohol. Vets say the alcohol in beer is a lethal poison for dogs and even a small amount can be deadly.
They are unable to metabolise it, so any product containing alcohol is very unhealthy for them.
Alcohol can cause lethargy, respiratory depression and dangerously low body temperature in dogs.
It can even be toxic and in severe cases, proves fatal.
