Rare Black Bear Gets Electrocuted While Climbing Utility Pole

The chilling video shows a rare black bear lying dead on the ground after it got electrocuted while climbing a utility pole.

Smartphone footage recorded by an unidentified local shows him approaching the dead animal in the town of Napeng, in the Quinnan district, of China’s south Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on 7th January.

In the recording, the bear can be seen lying under the pole with its limbs stretched out on the ground, as blood oozes from its mouth and nose due to the electric shock.

Chinese media revealed that the animal’s dead carcass was first uncovered by locals who arrived in the area in an attempt to figure out the cause of a power outage that occurred in the village.

When they saw the bear they instantly reported the case to the relevant authorities, and called electric workers to fix the electricity issue.

Napeng city officials said that the bear’s remains were handed over to forest authorities for disposal. There were no other casualties in the incident.

The distressing video was liked more than 439,000 times and shared another 218,000 after it was shared on China’s version of TikTok, Douyin, the same day.

Douyin user ‘By your side’ said: “I want to know what happened to the bear in the end.”

Then user ‘cool’ commented: “Are there actually bears in Qinzhou? I won’t dare to play outside anymore.”

And ‘avocado fruit’ added: “Imagine the bear suddenly jumping up and saying ‘Hey, I fooled you!'”

Asiatic black bears, also known as moon bears or white-chested bears are native to Asia. And are largely adapted to an arboreal lifestyle

The species is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. With their main threats being deforestation and poaching for its body parts, that are used in traditional medicine.
