Moth Looks Like A Twig To Fool Predators

This is the remarkable incident captured on camera where a twig suddenly sprouts wings and flies off.

The unusual footage was captured at a home in Hunan, China, on 4th July when the man stumbled upon what he at first thought was an ordinary wooden stick. However, he clearly realised things were not as they seemed as he started to film.

With curiosity getting the better of him, he attempted to move it with a pair of pliers, and the seemingly inert stick suddenly sprouted wings and fluttered away, leaving him dumbfounded.

In his video capturing the extraordinary encounter, the man cautiously approached the wooden stick, and clearly was suspicious of it as he was filming it at the time.

Suddenly wings emerged from what was once a static object, and the mysterious creature took flight.

This peculiar creature, later identified as the Buff-tip moth, exhibits an incredible defence mechanism to evade predators by assuming the appearance of a broken twig.

Buff-tip moth, scientifically known as (Phalera bucephala), is a moth of the family Notodontidae, It is found throughout Europe and in Asia to eastern Siberia.

The Buff-tip moth mechanism known as “mimicry” confuses its potential predators, such as birds, who are less likely to perceive it as prey.

This incredible adaptation serves as a survival strategy, allowing the moth to blend seamlessly into its surroundings and avoid being captured.
