Flying Ants Swarm Tourists At 6,000-Ft High Mountaintop

A tourist who climbed to top of a mountain hoping to enjoy the view shared through video how he could barely keep his eyes open after thousands of winged insects swarmed the scenic area.

Phone footage shows the unnamed man standing on the rocky 6,000-ft high top at Huangshan Mountain, in eastern China, among a group of people struggling to keep their balance while swatting away the pesky bugs.

The countless insects fly towards people’s faces and land on their clothes despite their efforts to brush them off with their hands.

One woman appears to be trying to keep her eyes closed to avoid any of the bugs getting in them and begins screaming because she cannot escape them.

The man filming says: “It’s so scary, they’re biting!”

Local entomology experts later said the annoying fliers must be some type of ant that, judging from the video, was harmless to humans despite some people claiming they had been bitten.

The Huangshan Scenic Area Management Committee said their large numbers are likely due to the ongoing breeding season which led them to fly around and try to expand their colonies.

Staff described the event as a natural phenomenon with a relatively short duration.

The quantity of flying ant colonies varies with the size of the nest, and the timing and location are not fixed.

Similar incidents have previously been reported in the past, according to the Committee.

Staff promised to strengthen monitoring in the area and collaborate with relevant experts in hopes of effectively reducing the impact of flying ant colonies on tourists’ experience.
