A pig farmer has gained online popularity for sharing videos of the entire pigsty dancing around to upbeat music as soon as he plays some on a loudspeaker.
According to the farmer-turned-DJ, surnamed Fu, he has been breeding pigs for the past five or six years at his farm in Nanning, in China’s southern Guangxi Region.
He claimed that he found during that time that regularly exercising pigs results in sweeter and more delicious meat compared to less active ones.
Phone footage shared on Douyin, the Chinese TikTok, shows the pigs lying in their pens. But as soon as Fu plays them a song, they all jump up and begin moving around, almost as if they were dancing in a nightclub.
In other videos, Fu had apparently tried to take his ‘DJ game’ a step further by including colourful disco lights.
Fu believes that playing music can enhance the pigs’ mood, increase their food consumption, boost their vitality, reduce the likelihood of illness, and make the meat firmer with increased physical activity.
He said that the pigs react differently to various types of music, including rock and heavy metal.
When playing DJ music, the pigs seem to enjoy jumping around in their pens, while sentimental music makes them appear more “enchanted.”

His unconventional practice has caught the attention of many netizens.
One Douyin user titled ‘silent.’ commented: “Pigs are living better than me these days.”
User ‘Zhang family two thousand gold’ wrote: “Give the second booth a fruit platter and a dozen beers.”
And ‘Open Didi Lake’ said: “Pigs are very sensitive to external sound signals. I used to raise pigs at home, and sometimes a little sound would make the entire pig farm jump.”
Addressing concerns from netizens about the potential for pigs to lose weight due to music, Fu responded that music can enhance vitality without causing weight loss.
As for the effectiveness of playing music for pigs, animal experts have suggested that music falls under the category of welfare farming. It can help soothe the pigs’ emotions and reduce stress, which, in turn, can positively impact the quality of the meat.
