This is the moment a bear realises it’s bitten off more than it can chew when it tangles with a pack of fearless dogs as it tries to eat their terrified pups.

The desperate fight for survival was recorded on a smartphone from a farmhouse in the remote Far Eastern Russian republic Yakutia.

The footage begins with a bear sniffing out two helpless weeks-old puppies cowering under some wooden stairs.

As the powerful bear sweeps aside the steps with a slash of its paw, the puppies whimper and call for help as their hunter closes in for the kill.

Then – as the bear’s jaws are about to fasten on one pup’s head – a pack of dogs rushes in to protect the youngsters.

One – possibly their mother – takes an extraordinary risk and bites the bear on the backside, making it chase her away.

The distraction allows the pups to find a new hiding place on the veranda and eventually, the snarling and snapping as the dogs surround it drives the bear away.

By then, humans had joined in, and the bear flees off camera back into the woods.

Yakutia, also known as the Sakha Republic, is a federal subject of Russia located in northeastern Siberia.

The region is known for its extremely cold temperatures and vast wilderness.
