Escaped Wallaby Roams Portuguese City Street

This is the baffling moment a driver films a wallaby as it hops down a Portuguese city street.

The roaming marsupial was reported to the authorities after being spotted in several different locations in Vizela, Braga District, on the morning of 16th June.

The Territorial Command of the National Republican Guard later confirmed that the animal had been rescued by the Nature and Environment Protection Service.

It was captured near a factory on the outskirts of the city with the help of local people, according to reports.

A veterinarian was at the scene to perform a check-up on the wallaby, which reportedly legally belongs to a young resident of the city.

The marsupial, named Popeye, did not cause any injuries, and the specialist confirmed that it was in good health.

It was microchipped, in order to locate the owner quickly if it escapes again, before being returned to its enclosure.

In Portugal, the ownership of exotic animals, including wallabies, is allowed but is subject to strict regulations and requirements.

The wallaby is a middle-sized marsupial mammal belonging to the kangaroo family and is found chiefly in Australia.

There are introduced populations in the United Kingdom, such as in the Peak District, where five wallabies escaped from a local zoo during World War II, and on the island of Inchconnachan, where a number of red-necked wallabies were introduced by Lady Colquhoun in the 1920s.
