Bioparc Valencia celebrates the successful intervention in saving the life of a newborn Thomson’s gazelle.
The park’s staff monitored the young gazelle after birth but noticed it was not being nursed by its mother, and so they attempted to feed it by hand, providing the crucial colostrum that ultimately saved its life.
The newborn gazelle, confirmed to be a female, continues to be closely monitored and receives specialized care. She is weighed daily to ensure proper feeding with a mix of fresh and evaporated milk. The team imitates maternal behaviour during feedings to stimulate natural bodily functions.
Participating in an international conservation program for Thomson’s gazelle, Bioparc Valencia plays a critical role in safeguarding this endangered species. The park houses a group of five females and one male, with the new addition offering hope for the species’ survival.
Currently, the gazelle remains in indoor facilities for comfort and safety, gradually integrating with the rest of the herd to continue her growth and development. Bioparc Valencia emphasizes the importance of controlled breeding and ex-situ preservation efforts to ensure the species’ future in the face of endangerment.
