Baboon Skillfully Uses Drawer System To Grab Treats

A well-trained baboon was filmed as it pushed and pulled a small drawer through the door of its cage while a young boy dropped treats inside it for the animal to eat.

The incredible sight was captured by an unnamed visitor at Zhucheng Zoo, in eastern China’s Shandong Province.

The zoo had apparently introduced the smart feeding system to ensure a safe way of interacting with its animals, and one baboon has seemingly already gotten the hang of it.

It has apparently become a hit among children who delight in watching its clever antics, as seen in this phone footage that shows a young boy patiently feeding it.

The boy, wearing white trousers, a red T-shirt and blue cap, is seen putting treats in a specially design feeder similar to a drawer that goes in and out of the primate’s cage.

A child puts food in the little drawer for the baboon then the baboon pulls the drawer to take out the food several times in Zhucheng, Shandong, China, undated. The video was posted on Douyin the Chinese version of TikTok. (Kkdcc778899/AsiaWire)

As soon as the child drops in what appear to be pieces of grape, the baboon hurriedly pulls in the drawer and eats the fruit, then quickly pushes it back into the original position for the next round of feeding.

The video attracted widespread attention on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, gaining over 270,000 likes and more than 300,000 likes.

One user titled ‘Meowing’ said in a comment: “It’s so skillful at pulling drawers. Send it to Guangdong to help us make rice rolls.”

Another user titled ‘Xiao Linbu’ wrote: “I recommend that all zoos across the country have this design. It’s so fun.”
