This is the maternal moment when a mother opossum gives birth to her litter of babies at a gorgeous American-Brazilian influencer’s dining table in Brazil.

Video footage shot by influencer Virginia Fonseca at her apartment in Goiania, Goias State, shows the exhausted marsupial mum with her joeys in her pouch.

Astonished Virgina, who was born in the city of Danbury, Connecticut State, USA, and now boasts more than 44.3 million Instagram followers, found the creature flat out on the table on 11th October.

The footage shows the opossum too tired to move as she rests while her joeys feed in her pouch as 24-year-old Virgina’s family gathers around to look.

She told her followers in the video: “Now that’s it, the opossum is sleeping on the table.”

Her mum, Margareth Serrao, then also says: “Now she’s found this house to live in, she’s not afraid at all.”

But it was not too long after when the two realised that the opossum had just given birth to a litter of babies.

In the video, Margareth says: “The possum gave birth on the table. That’s all I needed. That’s why she’s quiet.”

Virginia, who is a mum of two, adds: “Now the little opossum will stay there with her young until the time she wants to leave.

“The table is closed and we’re going to leave them there.

“I think she must have brought them here out of fear and we’re going to leave them.”

Soon after, however, the family seemed to tire of playing possum and called wildlife specialists to move the mum and her joeys.

When frightened, opossums ‘play possum’ and fall over as if dead, and emit a foul-smelling substance to mimic death.

Margareth said: “She can’t stay here because she transmits disease.

“They came here to get her. Tomorrow we’re going to pest control this entire table.”

Virginia and her husband, Brazilian singer and songwriter Ze Felipe, later joked that their house has turned into a maternity ward.

Ze Felipe said: “Whoever needs it, the Costa Maternity Ward is open. In a little while, it will be a capybara giving birth on the table.”
