This is the curious moment a wild elephant stares at its own reflection after encountering a mirror on the outside wall of a villager’s house.

Video footage shows the huge tusker seemingly admiring itself in the mirror after wandering onto a property in Mengla, in China’s south-western Yunnan Province, in the middle of the night on 29th November.

It curiously raised its trunk and pointed it to the mirror, then stepped a bit more closely forward and looked at its own reflection for a few seconds under the light of an outside lamp.

It kept its eyes on the mirror for a few more moments as it slowly moved away and then walked around to the other side of the house before the footage ended.

Netizens on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, were apparently amused by the clip and were quick to comment.

One user titled ‘Sui Ruge’ wrote: “It finally knows what it looks like.”

User ‘2₀₁8’ said: “It kissed its reflection.”

And ‘human journey’ commented: “The elephant came to look in the mirror.”
