The drama – captured on a TikTok video – unfolded at a recent wedding event in Okija, a town in the Anambra State in Southeast Nigeria.
In the video – which quickly went viral with over 400,000 views – a number of guests can be seen taking off towards the street as they swat at the bees with their hands or pieces of clothing.
Some attendees even trip one over the other as they desperately try to get away from being stung.
One elderly man using a walking stick can be seen staggering behind numerous men running away from the venue.
Women can also be heard screaming as the person filming tries to laugh the trouble away.
Fortunately, none of the guests suffered serious injuries and were later able to regroup and carry on with the festivities.
The incident sparked heated debates, with witnesses attributing the bee attack to the Igbo gods being angered by the couple who had scheduled the wedding on a sacred day.
The newlyweds held their ceremony on a special market day even though locals advised them against it.
Witnesses claim the bees showed up minutes after the elders refused to give the bride wine to “search” for her husband among the guests – a traditional wedding ritual – thus invoking the gods’ wrath.
But many netizens suggested the bees were provoked by the loud noise and all the commotion.
And others suspect that it was simply a question of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
