Officials at the German Racing Sports Association in Cologne have updated the status of seven-year-old Flamingo Girl to a gelding, a castrated male horse, reports local media.

The switch came after vets discovered that Flamingo had been born with partially developed testes hidden in its abdominal cavity, which have now been removed.

The truth only emerged when the horse tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone after her victory in Italy’s Premio Elena e Sergio Cumani race on 19th September 2021.

Officials stripped Flamingo and its owner of the title and a EUR 32,000 (GBP 27,351) prize.

The move was because on average, stallions also tend to be around 30 per cent faster than mares.

Angry at being branded a cheat, trainer Henk Grewe commissioned his own medical tests at the Hanover University of Veterinary Medicine, and a team discovered that the horse had been born intersex, with male and female traits.

Now Grewe, Germany’s two-time champion trainer, says Falmingo will be back in action at a one-mile handicap at Meydan in Dubai, with his new gender.

Grewe, confirmed: “Flamingo Girl has been back in our stable for almost two weeks. The import took a while, so she’s only recently been back on the training list.”

He added: “She is now officially a gelding and is allowed to race in Germany in this status. She will need a little time to get going, we’ll see where she goes.

“Overall, it’s great that she’s back here. She looks very good and we’re excited to see if she can perform as well as she did before.”
