Volcano Shoots Lava 1,000 Feet Into Sky As Kilauea Eruption Forces Road Closures In Hawaii

This is the moment towering lava fountains erupt from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii sending ash and volcanic debris high into the air and forcing roads to be closed.

The footage was obtained from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and shows the eruption plume and lava fountaining at the summit of Kilauea inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawaii, in the US state of Hawaii, on 10th March.

Officials from the USGS said: “Episode 43 of lava fountaining at Halemaumau, Kilauea, began at 9:17 a.m. HST on March 10, 2026, and is ongoing.

“Fallout has been reported at overlooks within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, on Highway 11 near the National Park, and on communities neighboring Kīlauea summit, creating hazardous ground conditions.

“As a result, the Volcano Alert Level has been elevated from WATCH to WARNING.”

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said Highway 11 was closed between the 24 and 40 mile markers due to dangerous conditions caused by falling tephra.
