The young woman can be seen with her hands against the glass and her trousers lowered as her companion holds her from behind.

Other passengers remained on the opposite side of the glass, with at least one traveller taking out a phone to record what was happening.

The footage later circulated on social media and was seen by management at Venice public transport operator AVM-ACTV.

Local reports said the couple were on the number 1 service travelling from St Mark’s Square towards Piazzale Roma.

Reports differed over whether the incident happened on Friday or Saturday evening.

Despite other passengers being on board, the crew were reportedly not alerted while the encounter was taking place.

ACTV officials said staff would have intervened if they had been told what was happening.

The footage has also reportedly been made available to Venice local police.

Public transport boats in the city are fitted with CCTV cameras, which could help authorities identify the pair.

Obscene acts in a public place can be punished in Italy with fines of up to EUR 30,000 (GBP 25,782).

The offence can become a criminal matter if it is committed in the presence of minors.

Authorities can also pursue such cases without a formal complaint being made.
