Her family are seeking answers about what happened before, during and after the operation at a private clinic in Marostica, near Vicenza in the neighbouring Veneto region, on 28th January.

Relatives said the procedure lasted several hours and initially appeared to have gone well.

Clara briefly spoke to her partner, Alessandro Avi, after leaving the operating theatre, although she still appeared groggy from the anaesthetic.

Minutes later, she suddenly became seriously unwell.

Clinic staff provided emergency treatment before paramedics rushed her to San Bassiano Hospital in nearby Bassano del Grappa.

She fell into a coma and remained in what reports described as a vegetative state for the following eight months.

Clara was later transferred closer to home, first to Santa Chiara Hospital and then to the Villa Rosa rehabilitation facility, at her family’s request.

Her condition deteriorated in the final weeks, and she was readmitted to Santa Chiara around 10 days before her death.

Alessandro told local media: “By then we had understood that nothing could be done. We all stayed close to her. In recent weeks, she got worse and was transferred to Santa Chiara.”

The couple lived in Pergine Valsugana, near Trento, where Clara taught at Rodari primary school.

Her daughters, Miriana and Sara, had already lodged a complaint in the months following the operation.

Prosecutors in Vicenza are investigating and have ordered a post-mortem examination.
