The Toyota Land Cruiser then suddenly comes into view travelling across the rough ground towards the riverbank.

A woman can be seen falling from the vehicle as it continues towards the edge.

The safari truck then plunges down the steep bank and disappears from view as it crashes head-first into the Mara River.

Four Swiss tourists and Tanzanian driver Ramadhan Miraji Mbaga were inside the vehicle when the accident happened.

The stretch of the Mara River is home to Nile crocodiles and is one of the best-known locations for watching wildebeest and zebras cross the water during the annual Great Migration.

All four tourists and the driver were rescued following the crash and escaped without physical injuries.

The vehicle, registration T-377 BJE, belonged to tour operator Nature Responsible Safari.

The company said the tourists were able to continue their holiday following the ordeal and had since travelled to the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar.

Nature Responsible Safari said: “We are very grateful to confirm that all our clients and our driver are safe, with no physical injuries reported.

“Our clients have since continued their journey and are now in Zanzibar, where they are proceeding with their vacation as planned.”

The company thanked the national park authorities, other safari operators and guides who helped following the crash.

It added that it would strengthen its internal safety procedures, supervision of guides and operational controls following the incident.

Tanzania National Parks Authority, known as TANAPA, confirmed the accident and launched an investigation into what happened.

Officials also reminded safari drivers, visitors and tour operators to obey the rules governing river-crossing areas and follow instructions from park supervisors.

The authority warned drivers against speeding and scrambling for the best positions at the popular Kogatende crossing points along the Mara River.
