Rare Wind Vortex Above Volcano Captured On Video

This video shows a rare wind vortex formed above an active volcano.

The image of the vortex also known as whirlwind was captured on the south rim of Halema‘uma‘u crater above the eruption site at the summit of Kīlauea.

These features have been observed during eruptions and forms due to the extreme heat according to the United States Geological Survey.

Kilauea volcano, the home of Pele, Hawaii’s volcano goddess, reportedly started erupting again on Wednesday, 7th June.

In a separate live video, footage of the eruption shows lava flowing through the crater and with large bursts bubbling up.

The alert level for Kilauea was raised to red for “warning” as a result.

The eruption is currently confined within the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency says there is currently “No indication that populated areas are threatened.”
