Footage shows the bull lifting a wooden barrier before squeezing underneath it and breaking free from the fenced route near the town centre.

According to reports, the animal then ran through streets around Plaza de Espana as spectators rushed out of its path and organisers scrambled to regain control.

Several vehicles were used to contain the bull before it was eventually guided back into the protected course.

The drama happened at around 10:28am after the animal escaped from the urban section of the traditional bull run.

Mayor Ana Rosa Zamarro said: “The bull lifted the barrier and got underneath it to go around the block in the Plaza de España area of our town.”

She added: “It was outside the route for about two minutes, but the great coordination between everyone prevented more serious consequences and the bull was never lost from sight.”

According to the Castilla y Leon 112 Emergency Centre, the escaped animal injured the 55-year-old woman from the nearby town of Turegano.

Emergency officials said the spectator came into contact with the bull after it left the route and was knocked backwards, striking her head when she fell to the ground.

The incident triggered a major emergency response, with the Guardia Civil, ambulance crews and a medical helicopter all dispatched to the scene.

Medics treated the injured woman before transferring her to the Segovia Healthcare Complex for further care.

Municipal sources later said the casualty was recovering well in hospital and was in a stable condition.

The mayor praised the response from organisers and emergency services, saying: “The security is total at Cantalejo’s bull runs.”

She added: “We study every event in detail and there is great coordination to avoid any type of incident.”

Local authorities said the barriers had been correctly installed before the event and stressed that all protective fencing is checked every morning before the bull runs begin.

Despite the scare, officials said the animal was never missing from sight and was quickly located near the route before being safely returned to the enclosed area.
