CCTV shows the incident at a smallholding in the town of Rio Preto da Eva, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, on 30th July.
The footage shows the cat moving across the plot and pausing beside the spot where the dog was lying after sneaking up on it. It then appears to attack the dog, which wakes up and chases it off.
The animal was reportedly a puma (Puma concolor), listed as Least Concern worldwide on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, although the South American population is rated Near Threatened.
Residents of the Ramal do Tubira area were left on edge by the recording and have since taken extra care when walking near the treeline.

The species is known locally as the sussuarana or onca-parda and is the second largest cat in the Americas.
Anyone who spots the animal again has been told not to go near it, try to catch it or give chase.
The advice is to stay well back and alert the environmental authorities so that trained staff can deal with it.
