The youngster falls safely to the side while the motorcycle instead slams into Onur, sending him, the rider and the bike crashing to the ground.

Reports said the girl had been running across the road towards her father and escaped the collision unharmed.

Onur suffered fractures to his left shoulder and spent several days in hospital, while the motorcycle rider was also injured.

The restaurant manager reportedly asked about the girl’s condition when he regained consciousness in hospital.

Onur has now been presented with a Merton Heroes Award by Merton Council in recognition of his actions.

He received the award from Merton Mayor Suli Saida at a ceremony on 16th September after being nominated by former mayor Stephen Alambritis.

Speaking at the ceremony, Onur said: “There was an accident on 25th May. I made a move that any good person, any good father, could have made, and I was able to help a young child escape the accident unharmed.

“I believe every good person would have acted in the same way in that situation. Standing by and watching was simply not something I could have done in good conscience.”

Stephen said the motorcycle had been travelling at around 20mph and that Onur reacted immediately after seeing the girl run into its path.

He added: “Without Onur’s brave intervention, who knows what might have happened to that little girl?”
Merton councillor Meriam Hakim said Onur had been nominated both for rescuing the child and for the respect he had built within the local community.

Onur’s son said he had initially been worried when he heard what had happened but was relieved when he learned that his father would recover and the little girl had escaped unharmed.
