Loyal Horse Travels 12 Miles To Return To Former Owner Months After Being Sold

A horse stunned its former owner after travelling around 12 miles alone to return to his old home months after being sold.

The incident happened in the town of Maranguape, in the Brazilian state of Ceara, on 2nd February.

Joao Bergson Moura, 35, said he was forced to sell his horse Betano in September 2025 to raise BRL 3,500 (GBP 495) for an urgent family situation.

Five months later, the animal broke its ropes at its new location and disappeared, prompting the current caretaker to message Joao asking whether the horse had somehow made its way back.

Joao said he struggled to believe it was possible, as Betano was being kept around 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) away.

But later that same night, the horse appeared at the gate of Joao’s home, where he had previously been kept.

By around 4pm the following day, Betano was still there, waiting.

In a video shared on social media, Joao calls out the horse’s name and the animal responds, lifting its head before walking directly towards him.

The footage shows the horse standing calmly in the yard as Joao films the reunion and speaks about recognising his longtime companion.

Following widespread attention online, an online fundraising campaign was launched to help Joao buy Betano back.

The campaign raised the full amount needed, and the current owner agreed to sell the horse for the same price he had originally paid.
