Police and forest department officials launched an hours-long joint search across nearby fields, bushes and possible hiding spots, but the leopard has not been found and is thought to have retreated into adjoining forest.
Officials have urged residents to remain indoors at night, to avoid venturing out alone without good reason, and to report any fresh sightings to the authorities.
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, and the Indian leopard subspecies (Panthera pardus fusca) is listed as Near Threatened.
