This is the moment the Kilauea volcano unleashes towering lava fountains reaching up to 1,000 feet into the night sky during an eruption.
The dramatic eruption was recorded at Halemaʻumaʻu crater at the summit of Kilauea in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island, United States, on Sunday, 15th February.
Episode 42 began at 1:50pm HST and lasted for nine hours and 48 minutes, with sustained lava fountaining from both the north and south vents.
At its peak, the south vent hurled molten rock approximately 400 metres (1,300 feet) into the air, while the north vent reached about 300 metres (1,000 feet), according to the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO).
A vast eruption plume climbed to around 35,000 feet above sea level as lava blasted from the crater.
Rock fragments, fine ash and strands of volcanic glass known as Pele’s hair were reported in several nearby communities.
Officials said wind conditions influenced where volcanic material fell, with strong northeast trade winds keeping ashfall minimal compared with the previous eruptive episode.
The USGS said it will continue to monitor conditions and warned that volcanic gases and fine particles may affect air quality in areas downwind of the summit.
