This footage shows 12 Scottish Fold cats awaiting surgery after being rescued along with dozens of others from a tiny apartment that served as an illegal breeding facility.
The video shows the cats lying side by side, fast asleep under anaesthetic, as they wait to be neutered at a shelter in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on 5th November.
According to the Tierheim Dellbruck animal shelter, the 12 males were among 40 Scottish Fold cats seized from a cramped apartment where a breeder was keeping them.
Officials removed the animals and transferred 12 males and five females to the shelter.
The cats were neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, and all are said to have recovered well after their operations.
Shelter spokesperson Sylvia Hemmerling can be heard in the clip saying: “They are all being neutered one after another.”
The shelter said the Scottish Fold breed is banned from being bred in Germany because of a genetic defect that causes deformities and chronic pain.
Hemmerling said: “Scottish Fold is a torture breed. They often develop physical disorders and problems that become very expensive.”
She added that social media trends have encouraged demand for the cats. With influencers showing them off as fashionable pets.

When owners realise the cost of treatment or the health issues involved, many abandon them or hand them to shelters.
The shelter said the rescued cats are still shy and will stay in care for some time before being offered for adoption.
Staff hope the cats will be adopted by people who understand the breed’s special needs and are prepared to give them proper long-term care.
