An eco-activist who exposed illegal water trafficking in Mexico has died following a brutal attack said to be linked to his campaigning.

Victim Alvaro Arvizu Aguinaga died on 19th June at a clinic in the municipality of Chalco, in the Mexican state of Mexico, after the vicious attack six days earlier (13th June).
Raiders burst into his environmental group headquarters and inflicted severe injuries on the campaigner.
His wife and a co-worker at the Centre for Sustainability of the Sierra Nevada Incalli Ixcahuicopa (Centli) in Tlalmanalco, were tied up and beaten, according to local media.
The killing is being linked to Aguinaga’s campaign to expose the big businesses and crooks illegally diverting water for profit in the region.
His killing has caused outrage among environmental groups in Mexico.
The Metropolitan Autonomous University in Mexico City, said in a statement: “This educational institution acknowledges his valuable collaboration in the Research Programme for Sustainability and the Centre for Sustainability Incalli Ixcahuicopa (Centli), and strongly condemns the act of violence through which he lost his life.

“We demand justice from the corresponding authorities.”
Mexico’s grim record has made it the most dangerous country in the world for environmental activists.
In 2021 alone 54 eco campaigners were murdered, according to a report by Global Witness.
