The disturbing footage emerged from Saltillo, Coahuila state, northern Mexico, on 24th July, as the city faced renewed anger over a series of suspected animal cruelty cases.

The video shows a desolate, dusty dirt plot scattered with rocks and sparse vegetation in southeastern Saltillo, where the dog is trapped inside a narrow hole with the earth tightly packed around its body.

Only the animal’s head and neck are visible above the ground as it remains almost completely immobilised, appearing exhausted with its eyes barely open.

The dog can be heard desperately yelping and crying out from the hole as it appears to seek help while unable to free itself.

Witnesses alerted authorities after spotting the animal, which was found chained inside the hole and unable to escape.
Environmental Police officers rescued the dog and rushed it to a veterinary centre, where doctors found it suffering from severe malnutrition and a heavy tick infestation.
Veterinarian Jesus Juarez Rodriguez said medical tests, including X-rays, ruled out fractures or major traumatic injuries linked to the burial.
Instead, the animal’s critical condition was attributed to severe health complications caused by an advanced case of ehrlichiosis, an infection transmitted by ticks.
The dog received intravenous fluids, pain relief medication and treatment for the disease, while veterinarians also removed the extensive tick infestation.
Although the animal showed some initial response to treatment, doctors said its overall condition remained critical because of the severe impact the illness had on its body.
The dog later suffered a cardiorespiratory collapse and died on the night of 26th July despite the efforts of the veterinary team.
Authorities said the Environmental Police prepared an official report that was sent to the State Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating the case and working to identify those responsible.
No arrests have been announced in connection with the incident.
The case also sparked anger among animal welfare activists and rescue groups, who pointed to evidence that the dog had been restrained inside the hole and demanded tougher action against those responsible.
Activists said: “The animal did not fall by accident; it was chained inside a hole. We do not want financial settlements or public apologies anymore.”
They added: “Anyone who chains and buries a sentient being must be treated as a danger to society and receive mandatory preventive prison time.”
The group Por la Dignidad Animal A.C. also expressed outrage over the series of animal cruelty cases reported in Saltillo.
The group was quoted as saying: “Activists demand jail time, not a fine. This case has already reopened all the others. Is Mexico tough enough with penalties for animal abuse? Prison for animal abuse.”
The case came just days after the death of Rocky, a Great Pyrenees dog whose alleged mistreatment and death sparked outrage across Saltillo.
The two cases led to calls for tougher action against animal cruelty, with Coahuila Governor Manolo Jimenez announcing plans for a specialised prosecutor’s office dedicated to investigating crimes against animals.
