A 37-year-old doctor was found stabbed to death beside her eight-month-old baby in an attack allegedly carried out by her 25-year-old lawyer husband.

Gassi Paola de Souza Mazia was found inside the family’s apartment in Maringá, in the northern part of Paraná state, southern Brazil, on Saturday, 5 September.

Police said her husband, 25-year-old João Vitor Domingues Romeiro, stabbed Gassi during a furious row before leaving the property.

The couple’s eight-month-old son was left alone inside the apartment with his mother’s body but was not injured.

Neighbours reportedly heard the baby crying and alerted the emergency services after nobody answered at the property.

Paramedics confirmed Gassi was dead after emergency crews reached the apartment, according to police.

Romeiro was later found about 20 miles away in Mandaguari, where police located him at his mother’s home.

He had knife wounds and was taken to hospital, where he remained under police guard after being arrested on suspicion of femicide.

Military police said Romeiro had allegedly admitted to witnesses while receiving medical treatment that he had killed his wife at their home in Maringá.
Investigators said the couple had experienced a troubled relationship and had recently reconciled.
Police are also investigating how Romeiro suffered his injuries.
Gassi had worked as a family doctor at the Nova Aliança Basic Health Unit in nearby Sarandi after graduating in medicine 10 years ago.
Sarandi City Hall said: “During her time in the municipality, she dedicated her knowledge, experience and professional commitment to caring for the population.
“Her contribution to public health in Sarandi will be remembered with respect and gratitude by everyone who had the opportunity to share her journey.
“At this time of grief, Sarandi City Hall offers its sympathy to her family, friends, colleagues and everyone suffering from her loss.
“Given the circumstances of her death, we also express our rejection of all forms of violence against women.”
Romeiro, an attorney who worked as a legal adviser for the municipality of Marialva, was dismissed from his post following his arrest.
The Civil Police of Paraná are investigating the killing as femicide.
