A jury found Ragazzi guilty of attempted aggravated homicide classified as femicide over the attack on Jenifer Cristina de Oliveira Costa, then 22, during which prosecutors said he violently thrust his hand inside her and caused injuries so severe that she claimed he was trying to tear out her uterus.

During the attack, Ragazzi allegedly told her: “If you are not mine, you will not be anyone else’s.”

Prosecutors said Ragazzi entered Jenifer’s home in the early hours after refusing to accept the end of their two-year relationship.
When she refused to have sex with him, he subjected her to a prolonged assault in which he punched and bit her and repeatedly smashed her head against a wall, according to the prosecution.
Ragazzi then restrained Jenifer and violently inserted his hand into her vagina, causing severe injuries and heavy bleeding.
He then left the property without helping her while she was seriously injured and bleeding heavily.
Jenifer managed to call her mother, who arranged for her to be taken to Risoleta Tolentino Neves Hospital, where she underwent surgery.
Her three-year-old daughter was also inside the home at the time but was in another room during the attack.
Ragazzi was arrested later the same day and has remained in custody since his detention was converted into preventive imprisonment on 1st August 2024.
During the trial, he admitted assaulting Jenifer but denied raping her and claimed the pair had attacked each other.
Ragazzi told the court he had gone to the property only to talk and claimed he left Jenifer conscious and walking normally.
He also said he regretted going to the house and becoming involved in the confrontation.
Four other witnesses gave evidence during the trial.
The jury accepted the prosecution case that the attempted killing involved a base motive, cruel means, an attack that made it difficult for Jenifer to defend herself and domestic violence against a woman.
Judge Marco Antonio Silva initially calculated a prison term of more than 28 years before applying the statutory one-third reduction because the killing was attempted rather than completed.
Ragazzi was sentenced to 18 years in a closed prison regime and was denied the right to appeal while free.
